Course description:
The Master of Arts in Special Education provides opportunities for educators to experience professional and personal growth and development through a systematic approach to the description, assessment, planning of programs for exceptional children.
The program has a core of twelve (12) units in the foundation subjects, eighteen (18) units for the major subjects including field practice, six (6) units of electives and six (6) units for thesis writing. During the last semester of the program, the student prepares a final assessment of growth that has taken place during the program of study. A comprehensive examination that integrates all significant learning experiences has to be taken and an oral presentation and defense of the thesis must be done.
Program Objectives
The MA Program in Special Education aims to help educators:
1. Recognize the physiological, social, psychological and environmental factors that help shape the development of special children.
2. Provide the special environment for the special child by designing appropriate programs of study and evaluation tools that will shape their development and their role in society.
3. Apply a repertoire of knowledge and skills in conducting educational research that can further tap the full potentials of special children.
4. Empower the special learner to become a productive and self-reliant member of society.
Admission requirements:
Admissions criteria and requirements of the program are as follows:
1. Completion of an undergraduate degree in Education (BSE, BSEEd) with twelve (12) units in Special Education.
2. For graduates of other colleges and universities, at least two-year teaching experience or the eighteen (18) units requirement in Education (for non-BSE graduates) plus the following subjects in Special Education which are pre-requisites to the program:
2.1 Overview of Special Education
2.2 Principles and practices in Special Education
2.3 Assessment and Evaluation of Exceptional Learners 1
2.4 Extended Learning Through Art
3. Submission of accomplished Application Form to Admissions/Registrar’s Office together with a certified true copy of the transcript of records or Transfer Credential/Honourable Dismissal if the applicant has started her/his graduates studies in another institution.
4. SSC graduates who pass a qualifying examination and whose Cumulative Quality Point Average or CQPA is at least 3.0 in their major subjects and who do not have a grade lower than B in any major subject are granted automatic admission to the program.
5. Graduates of comparable colleges or universities must meet the following requirements:
5.1 A CQPA of not lower than 3.0 or it's equivalent in major subjects;
5.2. No grade lower than B in any major subjects;
5.3 Must have passed the entrance examination:
5.4 Recommendation by a former professor in home school and employer.
